The 2026 Travel Industry in 8 Numbers: What Orlando Hosts Must Know

The global travel economy is worth $11.6 trillion — and the platforms sitting between you and your guests now keep 12 to 15.5 percent of every booking. Here is the 2026 travel industry in eight numbers, and what each one means for a vacation home near Disney World.

1. $11.6 trillion — the industry's weight

Travel and tourism contributed $11.6 trillion to the world economy in 2025 — about 9.8 percent of global GDP — supporting 366 million jobs. The World Travel & Tourism Council forecasts $12 trillion in 2026. The sector is the world's growth engine; the question is who captures the value.

2. 1.5 billion — record global arrivals

International tourist arrivals hit a record 1.5 billion in 2025. Demand is not the problem. Distribution is.

3. 68.3 million — the US went the other way

The US welcomed 68.3 million international visitors in 2025, down 5.5 percent, while the rest of the world set records. The US Travel Association does not expect a return to 2019 levels until 2029 — even with the 2026 World Cup. (National Travel and Tourism Office)

4. −21% — the Canadian pullback

Canadian arrivals to the US fell about 21 percent in 2025 — the clearest measurable trade-policy-to-tourism shift on record. For Orlando, the winter 2026–27 snowbird season is the litmus test: temporary blip or structural shift?

5. 15.5% / 12% / 15% — the new platform take

Airbnb completed its move to a 15.5 percent host-only fee in December 2025. Vrbo moves hosts to a flat 12 percent commission on October 29, 2026. Booking.com holds around 15 percent. Direct-booking payment processing costs about 3 percent. The gap between "platform" and "direct" has never been wider.

6. $6,000–$10,000 — the annual wedge

On $40,000 of annual bookings, platforms now keep $6,000 to $10,000 a year. Try our interactive annual fee-wedge calculator to see exactly what each platform takes from your revenue — and what a 3-percent marketplace keeps in your pocket.

7. Japan #1 — the WEF dethrones the US

The World Economic Forum's 2026 Travel & Tourism Development Index put Japan at #1, displacing the United States for the first time. 101 of 110 economies improved — but travel became less affordable in 3 of 4 economies, and a 43-million-worker shortfall looms by 2035.

8. $5.37 billion — one quarter of OTA marketing

Airbnb, Expedia Group, and Booking Holdings spent $5.37 billion on marketing in Q2 2026 alone — and are reinvesting it in agentic AI (Expedia's deal with Anthropic's Muse, Google's agentic booking, ads inside ChatGPT). AI agents will mediate a growing share of bookings; machine-readable rates and availability keep you visible.

The Orlando host playbook

  • Price against the fee wedge. A 12-point gap between platform fees and direct fees is your marketing.
  • Treat compliance as a feature. Florida preempts local bans, but counties are adding registration regimes — and Orlando city is home-share-only in single-family zones. Licensed, registered, tax-current listings win as rules tighten.
  • Target the K-shape. Luxury (+25% hotel revenue vs 2019) and sharp value are durable; the commoditized middle bleeds to the big platforms.
  • Court the snowbirds. Long-stay winter products, Canada-friendly pricing, and trust-first messaging go straight at the highest-value segment.
  • Diversify source markets. UK and Mexican arrivals grew in 2025 while Canada, Germany, and France fell — and domestic US travel spend is nearly triple international spend.
  • Make trust the product. Verified listings, ID checks, damage coverage, and real dispute resolution are the moat that matters.
